3 Tricks to Make INSANE Growl Basses

Do you want your growl basses to sound more meaty, more vocal, more sexy, and more monstrous? Well, of course you do. Today, we’ll be talking about 3 ways you can take your growl basses to the next level!

Trick #1: OTT Compression

If you aren’t already familiar with OTT compression, OTT stand for “Over The Top”. What is Over The Top compression, you may ask? Well, OTT allows for extreme upwards and downwards multi-band compression. In other words, it’s going to make your growl basses sound way fatter. You can run Serum through one, two, or maybe even three of these and really beef up the sound. Ableton Live has one of these included stock, but Xfer Records (the makers of Serum) created one that you can download for free here.

Trick #2: Resampling

Another trick that all the pros are using is resampling. So, basically, you take your MIDI clip and flatten it (or bounce in place) so that you’re left with the raw audio. Now you can do things like chop it up, duplicate it, take parts out, fade in, fade out, use features like Flex Time or Flex Pitch in Logic; lots of possibilities here. This way, you can make sounds that are hard to recreate, and give yourself a unique sound.

Trick #3: The Power of Presets

This one is something a lot of people overlook. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of the presets you have access to. The fundamental parameters of each are proven to sound good already, and you can make adjustments to tailor it to your liking and create your own unique sound.
